The Active Transportation and Safe Roads Advisory Committee is responsible for advising Council on matters related to safe roads, active transportation and trails, and related policies, programs and facilities. The committee serves as a liaison between the community and the Town of Whitby on active transportation and safe roads, and takes action to influence policy progress.

The committee takes an active role and provides input on:

1.  The implementation of active transportation components of the Active Transportation Plan, Waterfront Parks and Open Space Master Plan, Transportation Master Plan and Official Plan;
2.  The development of transportation plans, policies and programs to promote and encourage safety for all road and trail users;
3.  The development, delivery, maintenance and monitoring of active transportation policies, programs, initiatives and facilities;
4.  Education of residents and businesses regarding the environmental, social, economic and health benefits of active transportation through public outreach, education programs and events;
5.  Promoting and supporting active transportation as a routine component of the work/school commute, shopping, socializing and entertainment;
6.  The development of an effective public engagement strategy, including social media use;
7.  Promoting and enhancing integrated cycling and leisure trails within Whitby and neighbouring municipalities;
8.  Encouraging legislation and policy changes that support and strengthen active transportation; and,
9.  Advising on new or improved transportation initiatives for all road users, with a focus on pedestrians and cyclists.
